Ryan has coached lifters in their forties, fifties, and sixties for the past twelve years — first at a regional powerlifting gym that ran a strong masters team, then through his own online coaching practice focused on lifters who started or restarted strength training after 40. His programming reflects what he's seen across hundreds of clients: people in their fifties and sixties build strength at a remarkable rate when the programming respects recovery, joint history, and life context.
At Dorsi he reviews articles on strength training after 40, sarcopenia, and the programming choices that change once you're past the easy gains of your twenties. He's especially skeptical of programs that just take a young-lifter template and add "but recover more" — he prefers programs that rethink intensity, volume, and exercise selection from the ground up for the demographic.
Ryan still competes in masters-level powerlifting meets and has watched more clients hit their lifetime PRs in their fifties than in any other decade.
